About Wasps
Wasps are very common, yellow black striped flying insects. These are usually about 10-15mm long. They are attracted to sweet foods such as cakes and fizzy drinks and when angered, they produce a very painful sting.
Biology Of Wasps
The queen wasp makes a nest over the spring in which to lay her eggs. She is usually about 20mm in length and she hibernates over winter.
The grubs take 3-4 weeks to develop into worker wasps. During this time the queen feeds them insects.
One wasp nests can produce up to 30,000 wasps per year. The worker wasps are all sterile females and they forage for over a mile in search of food. Wasps are usually more noticeable in August and September as this is when the workers have been reared.
